Sejen bird, “hornbill” supported by a female figure

Origin: Ivory Coast
Culture: Senufo
Materials: Wood with traces of original color
Dating: Early 20th century
Dimensions: 104 cm – 40.94”
Price: €6.500,00

The sculpture depicts a seated woman with an elongated face holding on her head the Great Calao or Sejen, a primordial mythical bird whose long beak rests on a curved abdomen.
There are two secret societies among the Senufo: Poro, a male secret society, and Sandogo, a female secret society. In their rituals, the members of the Poro society are guided by their ancient mother, the goddess Maleeo, companion to the god Koloco (this divine couple is a typical feature of Senufo sculpture), who, on the other hand, acts as a guide for the Sandogo.
