Mbumba Bwete

Origin: Central Gabon
Culture: Kota, Sangu
Materials: wood, copper and brass plates, ivory
Dating: early 20th century
Dimensions: height 31 cm (12.20″)

This Kota reliquary, developed by the Sangu and Shamaye communities, is distinguished by its smaller size compared to classic ngulu mbulu, eyes made of ivory instead of metal, and the absence of the iconic crescent moon. These peculiarities reflect not only a different approach to relic preservation and transportation, but also variations in ritual practices.
