Cabinet with carved front and side parts

Origin: Africa, Mali
Culture: Dogon
Materials: solid wood, metal
Dating: early 20th cent.
Dimensions: height 130 cm – 51.18”

A rare example of Dogon culture: a wooden cabinet with intricate carvings on the facade. Usually only individual parts are found, especially the doors, but not the whole cabinet. Such pieces are an indicator of social status within the village: the more elaborate and detailed the design, the greater the prestige of the owner.

This piece of furniture is distinguished by its unusually large size. Particularly striking is the fine finish of the metal handles made in the shape of the primordial pair, meticulously joined in the one being.
