The Pende people, an ethnic group from the south-west of the Democratic Republic of Congo, are divided into two cultural groups: the Eastern Pende and the Western Pende. Both are known for their traditional masks, used in initiation rituals.
The Mbangu mask represents the misfortunes, diseases and disabilities that can affect a person.

The colours white and black have a symbolic meaning: white is associated with healing, while black represents witchcraft and illness. The deformed features of the mask focus precisely on the black side, emphasising the contrast between the two concepts.
