A rare metal (probably silver) funerary mask belonging to the important Liao dynasty (907-1125), founded in northern China by the nomadic Khitani people.

The Khitani/kitai were particularly noted for bronze, gold and silver objects created using unique metalworking and gilding techniques. During the Liao reign, such masks were dedicated to important people.
This life-size specimen shows an unusually high degree of finish and a good overall state of preservation.
