Tihu Skirt Man ‘Kwasayataqa’
Origin: Arizona, USA
Culture: Hopi
Materials: cottonwood, pigments, feathers
Dating: first half of the 20th century
Dimensions: height 25 cm – 9.84”
The decoration visible on the lower part of the body, characterised by geometric motifs, could represent a ceremonial skirt, typical of Skirtman. The rectangular, elongated shape of the eyes, together with the bird’s beak-shaped nose, are further elements suggesting the identity of this spirit.
Skirtman is often associated with didactic roles in ceremonies, during which he entertains the community or teaches appropriate behaviour.
