Figures of the genre, in frontal position, with prominent breasts and cubist geometry, illustrate Bamana notions of ideal female beauty gathered in the image of the ‘Jonyeleni’ or ‘Nyeleni’. The sculpture was probably used by the Jo association for initiation rituals addressed to young males. A similar object was described in the ‘Ex Africa’ edition released for Skira in 2019 (p. 43, Figure 2b).
