The male figure of the guardian is a ritual object of great importance to the Mambila people, who live along the border between Nigeria and Cameroon. Known as tadep, these figures represent ancestral spirits and act as protectors of the community. They are typically carved in wood and feature a heart-shaped face, an enlarged head, bent legs and squared shoulders.

These figures are closely associated with the rituals of the Suaga Association, a group responsible for justice, healing and protection from supernatural forces. During ceremonies, tadep figures are activated through the application of medicinal substances, symbolising their spiritual power. They are placed in homes or shrines to ward off evil, promote fertility and ensure prosperity.
