Maternal altar figure (Ekwotame)
Origin: Nigeria Culture: Idoma/Igbo Materials: Wood, pigments Dating: 19th century Dimensions: 152 cm – 59.84”
The art of the Idoma people shows influences from neighbouring groups, especially the Igbo and Yoruba. In this case for example, the whitened face of the statue recalls the Agbogho Mmwo masks of the Igbo, known for their mouth with incised teeth. The overall superstructure of the sculpture also reflects these stylistic influences.
However, the body features, especially the depiction of the children and their position, reflect a more typically Idoma visual tradition.
The present sculpture may belong to the Ekwotame category, which is a type of sculpture used during ceremonies and closely associated with ancestor veneration.
