Standing male shrine figure (alusi or agbara)

Origin: Nigeria
Culture: Igbo
Materials: Wood, traces of atmospheric agents and insects
Dating: Mid. 19th century Dimensions: 115 cm – 45,27”
Provenance: Ex collection Yasmina Chenoufi

A male pole or shrine figure, probably originally placed outdoors, as the state of preservation suggests.

The upright and compact posture, combined with the rough and worn surface, gives the figure an archaic intensity and character, evoking primal and timeless strength.
