‘Sio Hemis’ Kachina

Origin: Arizona, USA Culture: Hopi/Zuni Materials: Cottonwood, pigments, feathers Dating: Early 20th century Dimensions: 51 cm – 20.08” Provenance: Private collection

An image of a tree-step figure resembling a pyramid with a flat top that frequently appears on ears, head superstructures and kilts of dolls is a pueblos symbol of cloud. Such triple tablet is caracteristic of a Sio Hemis Kachina, that is the Zuni form of the Hemis Kachina, as mentions Barton Wright (1977). The difference of the Zuni version resides in the absence of the reproduction symbols on tableta.
